Tipps for a successful application process

Applying

Application processes today are diverse and can differ in how one learns about the open position, which application channels are used and which documents are required.

The classic steps in the application process are as follows:

About searching and finding jobs

Job search

The application process begins with a search for suitable job postings. Online job portals are a good starting point. But it's also worth taking a look at regional job portals (e.g., those run by regional agencies and business development agencies) or the websites of specialist organizations and associations. And if you are specifically interested in certain companies and organizations, you can also look for open positions directly on the websites of the corresponding employer.

Job postings for internships, entry-level positions and more can be found in the stellenwerk TU Dortmund University job portal.

Designing professional application documents

Applications can be submitted in a variety of ways. While paper applications are rarely expected today, applicants can submit their documents by email, via application portals or by app, send one-click applications via online job portals and social media, or hand in short applications at job fairs.

The chances of getting an interview for the desired job increase with appealing application documents. A CV, cover letter and certificates - adapted to the respective position - form the standard documents.

At TU Dortmund University students can find various support options for creating attractive application documents.

Mastering job interviews

  • Why did you apply for this position?

  • How do you imagine a typical working day with us?

  • What topics from your studies could be relevant to this position?

These are just a few examples of questions that could come up in the interview. You can't prepare for every conceivable question, but it's worth thinking about possible questions and answers before interviews.

Good preparation will also help you make a convincing appearance at other formats, such as accessment centers, multi-level or digital interviews, or brief introductions to companies at job fairs.
